Bright idea for cycle safety

Redcar and Cleveland Council's road safety team, with help and funding from the Middlesbrough Primary Care Trust, is distributing 300 sets of cycle lights to 10 primary and secondary schools in the area.

The council is promoting the initiative through a poster competition for the six primary schools, and a quiz for the four secondary schools - both geared to raising awareness of the dangers of cycling in the dark without lights.

The council's road safety manager Mike Hall said: "We will be involving hundreds of pupils in this promotion by going to school assemblies to reinforce the cycle safely message."
