Motorists asked to Make the Pledge

Motorists in Redcar and Cleveland are being asked to Make the Pledge when buying a new or used car.

Two local car dealerships are piloting a scheme in which motorists sign a driving pledge, which comprises nine conditions: Wake Up, Look Up, Sober Up, Slow Up, Wise Up, Back Up, Check Up, Light Up and Hang Up.

After returning the pledge form to the council's road safety team, motorists receive regular information about careful driving - and are included in a monthly draw for safety prizes worth £50.

Road safety manager Mike Hall, explained: "This initiative was originally developed by BRAKE but we have added to it."

The council hopes to extend the scheme to more motor dealerships if the pilot is successful.
