Teenage SCP hits the road

A teenager has become Northamptonshire's youngest ever school crossing patrol.

Hayley Gregoriu took over the patrol of Fieldmill Road for Bellinge Primary, which had been vacant since September 2005, on 4 January.

At 19, she is the youngest of Northamptonshire's 79 school crossing patrols, who together have clocked up 652 years service.

Hayley said: "I am really enjoying the job - apart from the cold mornings!

"I always wanted to work with children and it's a good feeling to be doing something for your local community. People get to know you and talk to you every morning, I feel like the work is really appreciated."

There are currently around 15 vacancies for school crossing patrols across the county, but finding new recruits is a long-term, national problem.

Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Bob Seery, said: "It is extremely gratifying that such a young person as Hayley is prepared to take on the responsibilities of the school crossing patrol - at a time when it is becoming increasingly difficult to fill vacancies."
