Walk to School support up 60%

Walk to School campaign organisers say that the number of schools participating has jumped by 60% in three years.

6,380 schools with 1,719,558 pupils look set to participate in the 2006 campaign.

WTS celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. The core of the campaign is the annual Walk to School Week in May, and the international week in October.

Many schools are also promoting 'Walk on Wednesday' (WOW), which can be adapted to 'Walk Once a Week', in order to encourage families to make walking part of their regular routine.

Co-organisers Living Streets and Travelwise are also running a two-day conference on 23/24 February in London to bring new and old campaigners together.

As well as launching the theme for 2006, the workshop will look at how children can do their bit to tackle climate change, and how to unlock funding sources.
