'Belt up' message from LARSOA
A seasonal message from LARSOA urging drivers and passengers to wear a seat belt was backed by a bereaved father whose son died 12 months ago.
In 2005, the Houliston family were anticipating a family Christmas but the festive season came to a tragic halt when 17-year-old Neil Houliston lost his life in a crash on Christmas Day. Neil's life may well have been saved if he had been wearing a seat belt - which is why his father Keith supported LARSOA's message.
Simon Ettinghausen, Chair of LARSOA, said: "Seat belts save lives. Everyone should wear them and at this time of the year when there are poor weather conditions a lot more collisions occur on the roads.
"Our sympathy is with the Houliston family for whom Christmas Day will always be the anniversary of their son's death and it should be remembered that his life could have been saved if he had been wearing his seat belt."
At Neil's inquest the coroner said that if he had been wearing his seat belt he would probably have suffered nothing worse than whiplash injuries.
