Partnership unveils 'community speeding' campaign

The Essex Safety Camera Partnership (ESCP) has launched a new campaign to discourage drivers from speeding in the own communities.

ESCP data shows that around half of road accidents in Essex in which someone is injured or killed happen less than three miles from the driver or rider's home - and 25% happen within a mile of that address.

ESCP spokesperson, Roberta Everitt, said: "We get a huge amount of correspondence from Essex residents requesting safety cameras in their local communities because they feel speeding is such a problem. However, this data shows that a lot of the time it's local drivers who are causing the problem.

"Speeding anywhere is anti-social and dangerous but if you're speeding in your own community you could be putting at risk someone you know - maybe even a neighbour or friend."

The campaign comprises a radio advertisement describing the devastating consequences for a driver who has killed his neighbour's son after hitting him while speeding; and billboard and Adshel posters. Click here to hear the radio commercial.

ESCP is also running a photography competition as part of the campaign. All entries will be on display at exhibitions staged between 29 January and 9 February.
