Leicestershire schools break world record

Pupils at six Ashby schools have received confirmation that they have officially broken a Guinness World Record for their part in creating the world's biggest ever walking bus.

1,346 people took part in setting the world record in October, including staff and pupils from four primary schools (Ashby Church of England, Hilltop, Willesley and Woodcote), Manor House Prep School and Ivanhoe Specialist Technology College.

The previous record was claimed by The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames where 1,109 children and parents took part.

The news comes in the same month that the government promised £15 million to primary schools to set up their own walking buses. Leicestershire primary schools have been informed of the funding and have until the end of January to apply.

Nicholas Rushton, cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: "By starting a walking bus or joining an existing one, parents can really help to make their community a safer environment and this is an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of the initiatives.

"Sometimes, parents think that roads are too dangerous but end up adding to the problem themselves by driving their children to school. Hopefully, by breaking the world record we will bring the issue to everyone's attention."
