School bands are a road safety hit

13 Bands from 10 Gwent schools performed their own anti drink drive compositions at a recent road safety music challenge.

This was the first time the event had been held and it was a great success. Helen Davidson, project manager with Capita Symonds road safety team, said: "The standard was extremely high and the evening was a resounding success. The musicians composed their pieces as part of their music lessons. As RSOs we are delighted to be able to integrate our message into the regular curriculum. The event has been so successful that we are planning to run it again next year."

The winners were selected by a panel of four judges, all with excellent knowledge and experience of music and interpretation of a message. The winning band was Safety Queen (see pic) from Tredegar Comprehensive School, with their song, 'Take a Ride'.

Band member Tom Caswell said: "We had a great time performing and we were surprised with our success as the other bands were great!"

A video of the winning song has been posted at: www.youtube.com
