Pupils
experience 'The Aftermath' of Another Fine Day
Bedfordshire Road Safety Teams Another Fine Day young
driver casualty reduction video has been used as the basis for a
school participation day.
Three schools were selected to pilot the initiative, which is entitled
Another Fine Day - The Aftermath.
There are several elements to The Aftermath experience.
First, the original Another Fine Day video is shown to students
in school early in the morning. Students are then taken to a hospital
mortuary where the senior mortuary officer gives a stark reminder
of what happens to a body in a fatal accident, and explains the
procedure that relatives and loved ones go through.
The students then walk across town, passing the scene of the accident
where the victims parents are grieving. They then move on
to a Court where the coroners report is read out and the drivers
trial takes place. Finally, the driver receives a two-year prison
sentence, is handcuffed and taken down to the cells.
The students then stand in silence for one minute as a mark of respect
for the young driver who probably died during that day in the Bedfordshire
region.
Afterwards the students chat with the judge, coroner and Court officials
- and police, fire and ambulance officers who were on hand to give
evidence.
The 75 students who participated in the pilot will be monitored
over the next two years, along with a shadow group of 75 who did
not, to determine the effectiveness of the scheme.
The Another Fine Day video is currently being edited and when this
is complete it will be available as two DVDs and a CD containing
the scripts and a 30-page crash investigators report. This
will enable others to duplicate the scheme, or schools to use it
as the basis for their own TIE project. This revised package should
be available in early autumn 2004.
