ROAD SAFETY NEWS - UPDATED 12 JULY 2004

1,500 children participate in Live & Dangerous 2004

Over 1,500 children from schools around Warwickshire took part in the three-day 2004 Live & Dangerous road safety event, which was held 30 June - 2 July at the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon.

Live & Dangerous is organised by Warwickshire County Council’s Road Safety Unit and is aimed at primary school aged children who will be moving to secondary school in September.

The day began with a theatre company setting the scene, followed by four interactive safety scenarios covering how to evacuate from a coach, safer routes to school, in-car safety, cycling safely and being ‘TravelWise’.

The afternoon session concluded with a demonstration of a cyclist being knocked off a bicycle and a spine-tingling car crash recreation, which is attended by the emergency services.

"Many of these children will face new and challenging journeys to school and may encounter road safety issues that they have not had to deal with before," said Alan Smith, chair of Warwickshire County Council. "Live & Dangerous provides the opportunity for pupils to explore how to deal with dangerous situations in a safe and controlled environment."
