ROAD SAFETY NEWS - UPDATED 26 JULY 2004

Poets win prizes

The winners of a road safety illustrated poem competition were presented with their prizes at County Hall, Cwmbran on 14 July.

This competition has been an annual event open to all schools in Gwent for seven years and is run in partnership between Heddlu Gwent Police and the road safety officers of Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen.

This year the theme was mobile phones and how they impact on the safety of road users. During the course of the competition, all four police forces in Wales had an enforcement campaign targeting phoning while driving.

Nearly 700 entries were received from schools all over the Gwent region. The standard of the poems was very high and choosing the eventual winners proved very difficult.

There are two categories, junior and senior. Each category has a winner, two runners up and several highly commended awards. The winners received a £100 cheque, runners up £50. Everyone, including highly commended entries, received a certificate.

Selected poems from the first five years of the competition have been collected into a book for use as a teaching resource. Titled Outside my Front Door, it will be published in the autumn using funding from the Welsh Assembly Government and every school in Gwent will receive a copy.
