Make hi-vis clothing part of uniform, guide says

A new publication for parents and teachers to encourage walking to school suggests that high visibility clothing should be part of the school uniform.

How to Get More Kids Walking to School, published by Safe Kids Walking, contains details of schemes including Walking Bus, Park & Stride and Walk On Wednesdays. It also suggests that schools should introduce high visibility clothing or bags as an optional element of uniform.

"We feel that fluorescent, reflective clothing not only makes children more visible but also makes parents more willing to let their children walk or cycle to school," said Allison Holland founder of Safe Kids Walking. "If it was part of school uniform it would no longer be regarded as unusual."

A limited number of free copies of the guide are available on request. To obtain a copy, or for further information contact info@safekidswalking.org.uk, Tel: 01536 454994.
