Casualties down in Northern Ireland
Steps taken to cut the number of people killed and seriously injured on Northern Ireland's roads are working, a new report suggests.
The DoE's annual report on the Northern Ireland Road Safety Strategy shows that the number of people killed or seriously injured in 2004 fell by eight per cent - bringing the figure to 24 per cent below the level when the strategy was published in 2002.
The statistics for children are even more significant, with a 12 per cent drop bringing the figure to 39 per cent below the original level.
The strategy's target is to reduce road deaths and serious injuries by 33 per cent and child fatalities and serious injuries by 50 per cent by 2012 - from the average for the five-year period of 1996-2000.
