Entries up for poets' competition
The theme for this year's Gwent schools Road Safety Poem Competition was car seat restraints - and more than 850 schoolchildren from across the region submitted entries.
Deputy Chief Constable Mick Giannasi presented the awards at an evening reception at County Hall, Cwmbran during Child Safety Week.
"As always, the standard of work is very impressive and the number of entries is up 150 on last year," said Penny Thorpe, principal road safety officer with Capita Symonds (Gwent Consultancy). "Without a doubt these young poets have taken on board the message that it makes sense to belt-up."
There was a winner, two runners up and several highly commended awards in both junior and senior categories, with the winners receiving £100 cheque and the runners up £50.
The competition is in its seventh year and poems from the first five years have been collected into a book for use as a teaching resource, Outside my Front Door. A copy has been sent to every school in Gwent.
