Walk-to-school plans win Government grant

16 Peterborough schools have been awarded a share of an £82,000 grant from the government's Travelling to School initiative for encouraging parents to abandon school run journeys.

The schools worked with staff, parents, pupils, governors and local residents to develop plans to make walking, cycling and catching the bus to school easier and safer.

The grant money will be used to implement the transport plans and the schools already have plenty of ideas - including a waiting shelter for parents, a shed for bicycle storage and base for teaching pupils about cycle maintenance. One school is also planning to upgrade its pedestrian entrance.

In September, Peterborough City Council is arranging a free one-day workshop to help other schools develop travel plans and apply for grants in 2006.
