Seat belts - nine out of 10 would have lived, Bromley says

According to figures released by the London Borough of Bromley, 88 per cent of all car occupants who died in a crash in the Borough would have survived had they been wearing a seat belt.

The figures, for the period 2002-2004, are based on evidence presented to the coroner. Other research shows that between 26 per cent and 33 per cent of the Borough's drivers do not wear belts.

In response, Bromley's road safety team and the police have been stopping vehicles and offering offenders the choice of a ticket or an 'educational chat' with a RSO.

Banners and posters have also been produced for lamp columns, bus shelters, notice boards and public events.

A child car seat centre - where parents can choose a seat that fits their car and/or be shown how to fit a seat - is also available. RSOs are also giving talks at antenatal and post-natal groups to educate parents about the importance of correct seatbelt and child seat use.
