Gwent pupils compete for safe cycling title

87 young people took part in the recent Safe Cycle Championship Final at County Hall in Cwmbran. The annual event has been running for over 40 years and is a showcase of the most competent on-road cyclists from Gwent schools.

Each competitor's ability is evaluated over a series of disciplines including observation, hand signals, braking, steering, positioning, general cycle safety and knowledge of the Highway Code.

The competition is part of the Council funded cycle training programme that takes place in primary and junior schools across Greater Gwent. Volunteer cycle instructors, mainly teachers and parents, present a series of lessons covering all aspects of basic cycle safety. This year over 2,500 Year Six pupils gained their cycle proficiency certificate.

Following the cycle training each school is invited to put forward their best riders for area competitions, and the top cyclists from each of these events are chosen to represent their area in the final.
