Please close this window to return to the LARSOA news pages Campaign targets smidsy crashes Motorists are being urged to look out for bikers as part of a new campaign to reduce the number of motorcycle casualties on South Gloucestershire's roads. "Our statistics show that a significant number of these accidents are happening because drivers are failing to see motorcyclists - particularly at junctions," said Pat Hockey , executive member for planning and transportation. "This kind of accident is known as a 'smidsy' - Sorry Mate, I Didn't See You! - accident." Temporary road signs displaying the campaign web address smidsy.co.uk and other messages will launch during National Motorcycle Week (18 - 25 July). The signs will be displayed at accident hotspots to remind drivers to look out for bikers. The campaign encourages drivers to log onto the website to find out more about motorcycling accidents and has gained approval from the British Motorcycling Federation (BMF). "This is a terrific initiative from South Gloucestershire Council," said BMF chairman, Dr Leon Mannings, "All too often we see well-meaning initiatives that just haven't been thought through. They often alienate the rider and confuse the driver. This educates all road users - which has got to be good for everyone."
