Children send message to drivers and parents

Drivers and parents in a Durham village are to receive a colourful road safety message produced by local schoolchildren.

A new road safety booklet, compiled by children at Sunnybrow Primary School and Durham County Council's road safety team, is to be delivered to all 500 households in Sunnybrow, near Crook.

Children throughout the school - from reception to final year juniors - drew colourful pictures to reinforce safety messages, which include asking drivers to slow down, finding a safer place to cross the road, using crossing patrols and wearing seatbelts. 20 of the pictures are used in the booklet.

The children presented the first copy of the booklet to local county councillor Brian Myers at a special assembly on 17 July. The booklet will also be distributed to libraries in Crook and Willington.

"The booklet was produced in response to concerns about speeding traffic on main roads through Sunnybrow, which were raised by children and parents during the drawing up of the school travel plan," said Alan Kennedy, Durham's road safety team manager.
