RSO wins national award
Hull City Council RSO, Sue Boyeson, was named Employee of the Year at the National Transport Awards, in recognition of her work in local schools and nurseries. Sue received the award at The Hilton, Park Lane on 18 July before an audience of 700 guests.
The award reflects Sue's innovative work in road safety education. Her main role is to help children develop essential road safety skills as pedestrians and cyclists, but her research revealed that nearly half of the children she was working with regularly travelled in the car without using a belt.
In response, Sue developed a project to help children understand why they should be 'belted up' and how they should strap in to stay safe. The activity starts with a storytelling session focusing on a teddy bear who is hurt when the car they are travelling in stops quickly. Next time the bear is belted up and stays safe. The children then go out to a specially prepared vehicle and practice belting up. Last month the 3000th child completed the activity.
Councillor Mark Collinson, who has responsibility for road safety in the city, said: "Sue's approach is inspirational. Her work has helped us cut the number of children killed or seriously injured by nearly 50%"
