TfL launches moped rider campaign
TfL has launched a new campaign to make parents and teenagers more aware of the risks of moped riding in London.
The campaign is in response to the increasing number of collisions sustained by young and inexperienced moped riders. The age group most at risk is those aged 16-18 years, and the campaign encourages parents to ensure that these young riders undertake Compulsory Basic Training (CBT), wear protective clothing and ride road worthy mopeds that have not been modified (adjusted to ride faster).
The focal point of the parent/adult campaign is a website (www.mopedsafety.com) containing a range of information including a DVD that reinforces the message to teenagers and parents. The DVD will also be distributed to schools, RSOs and moped/scooter dealers.
The element of the campaign aimed at potential and actual moped riders is www.dangerousgames.co.uk. The website content has been tailored specifically to teenagers and uses language and images likely to appeal to them. It includes information about CBT, competitions, real life stories and music, film and game reviews.
Steve Chesterman, from the London Borough of Harrow says: "We are seeing an increasing number of injuries sustained by teenagers riding mopeds. We believe that many of these accidents can be avoided through better awareness by parents and other influential adults, who play a key role in ensuring that teenagers are as safe as they can be."
