'White Helmets' taught safety skills

The Royal Signals 'White Helmets' motorcycle display team joined Devon County Council last week at the Devon Drivers' Centre, Westpoint to swap their normal routines for road safety skills.

Normally known for jumping through fire hoops, the team spent the day being taught on-road riding skills alongside local advanced groups - and helping to raise awareness of the dangers faced by motorbike riders.

The event launched an initiative to improve the safety of recreational motorcyclists, following a pattern in Devon over recent months of fatal motorcycle collisions involving bikers riding with others.

As well as providing motorcyclists with written information on improving safety when riding in groups, the council's road safety team is also working with local advanced riding groups to provide on-site advice and assistance. Bikers will be able to meet a member of an advanced riding group at an agreed location to discuss risk limitation.
