Scottish
council launches subsidised training scheme for new motorcyclists
Perth & Kinross Council has launched Bike Plus, a
subsidised road safety initiative to encourage new motorcyclists
to take additional training after they have passed their motorcycle
test.
Bike Plus which is open to new licence holders of all ages
who have passed their test in the last 12 months - is designed to
increase hazard perception, improve motorcycle control skills at
low and high speed and on motorways, at night and in poor weather.
The training comprises a one day course and the council is subsidising
participants for up to 50 per cent (£55) of the cost.

Bike
Plus is an extension of the councils Pass Plus scheme, which
since it was launched in December 2002 has benefited 130 newly qualified
car drivers in the area. Enquiries from newly qualified motorcyclists
interested in the idea of additional training prompted the council
to devise an extended programme in partnership with two DSA approved
motorcycle training bodies in the area.
"We designed this course to concentrate on the practical skills
required to ride motorcycles of all sizes," says Douglas
Barker, director GMTS Rider Training, one of the companies
delivering the training. "When a newly qualified rider can
get onto a modern mid-sized or large motorcycle, a little knowledge
can be a dangerous thing and the current DSA test is widely regarded
as insufficient to cover all aspects required for this type of machine.
Bike Plus goes a long way to encourage new licence holders of all
ages to do it right. Perth & Kinross Council should be congratulated
with this unique and positive initiative that is likely to be emulated
by others."
