Gwent bikers
told the facts
A new leaflet outlining the facts and statistics behind the 2003
motorcycle casualties in Gwent has been published. Motorcycles make
up about one per cent of road traffic, but in Gwent last year 13
per cent of road users killed or seriously injured were motorcyclists.
Copies of the leaflet were distributed to riders at the recent Heddlu
Gwent Police Bikesafe event at Abergavenny.
Inspector Steve Corcoran of Heddlu Gwent Police said:
" Gwent Police fully endorse and support the circulation of
this vital information. We continue to work closely with our partner
agencies in efforts to reduce the disproportionate level of motorcycle
casualties on our roads. Gwent Bikesafe aims to engage and educate
motorcyclists in a safe, professional and conflict free environment,
encouraging them to seek out further training. Providing riders
with relevant and accurate information concerning potential dangers
can only increase the opportunities to reduce casualties."
Penny Thorpe, principal road safety officer with Capita
Symonds said: "All riders are vulnerable but they can reduce
the risk of being involved in an accident by taking advice and training.
Our concern is to reduce casualties, not to deter motorcyclists."

The
Gwent Group of Advanced Motorcyclists was also present at the Abergavenny
Bikesafe event. Chairman of the motorcycle section Dave Elger
said: "We fully support any initiative that helps to
reduce injuries to motorcyclists. At the Gwent Group we offer professional
advice on how to make early recognition of hazards, which gives
the rider more time to react."
