Brake calls for restrictions on young drivers

The majority of motorists support restrictions for newly-qualified young drivers, according to a survey conducted by Brake and Green Flag.

69 per cent of those interviewed think there should be curfews and restrictions on passenger numbers. And 84 per cent backed the use of 'P' (provisional) plates for those who have just passed their test.

In addition, the compulsory introduction of the DSA's Pass Plus scheme to provide additional training was welcomed by 79 per cent of the sample.

Brake says that in 2003, up to 24 per cent of death by dangerous driving convictions were of drivers aged 20 and younger - yet this age group accounts for just two per cent of licence holders.

Restrictions on young and newly qualified drivers abroad include a ban on unsupervised driving at night in 25 US States, a limit on the number of young passengers in California, and probationary licences for a period after passing the test in Victoria, Australia.

"It is a tragedy and a disgrace that young men are the biggest culprits in killing their mates and girlfriends in road crashes," said Brake chief executive Mary Williams.
