'Take control', bikers are urged

Essex County Council has launched a campaign to encourage motorcyclists to Take Control and Ride Safely .

The campaign, which was unveiled on 6 June, stresses the vulnerability of motorcyclists and emphasises the importance of proper training and common sense.

Over the last four years 103 people have died on Essex roads as a result of motorcycle crashes. Although many young people are injured, there has been a significant rise in the number of casualties in the 30 - 49 age group - the riders who can afford more powerful bikes.

The campaign addresses riders and their families and friends, and features three different posters and radio adverts. It was developed in consultation with the Essex Motorcycle Forum Group, which includes representatives from Essex County Council, Essex Police, BMF, MAG, BikeSafe, IAM, EAMG, bike dealerships, trainers, and motorcyclists.

A booklet and CD-ROM featuring video clips, information about training, and links to useful websites, has also been produced. The CD will be distributed through motorcycle dealerships, at public events, and on request.
