Pre-pass practice key to safety

With one in three new drivers involved in a crash in their first year of driving, Lancashire County Council's Road Safety Group is piloting a new course for learners and their accompanying drivers.

The Pre-Pass Support Scheme , comprising one theory class and a two-hour practical session, is being offered free of charge for a limited period.

The Road Safety Group says that inexperience and peer pressure are the major causes of casualties in the 17 to 24 age range, and that with extra practice the risk of an accident in the first two years is greatly reduced.

"Giving young drivers as much practice, advice and support as possible while they are learning gives them the best chance to develop and maintain good habits and become confident but safety-conscious behind the wheel," says Neil Cunliffe , road safety group manager.

"For a parent or mentor, it is often daunting to take on the responsibility of coaching a teenager. This course gives basic training and advice on how to get the best out of extra sessions, including working with their professional instructor and maintaining a calm atmosphere."
