Safety campaigns and speed curbs cut road deaths
Safety campaigns and speed restrictions around schools have helped cut the number of road deaths in the west of Scotland, according to Strathclyde Police.
The Force says that road safety initiatives including the introduction of 20mph speed limits around schools helped cut the number of deaths by nine - from 116 in 2003 to 107 in 2004. The number of casualties also fell by 321, from 8366 to 8045, during the same period.
Local authorities across the west of Scotland have been given funding to enforce 20mph speed limits outside schools, and to promote cycling and safe route projects to schools.
The first phase of the project, funded by £3.5m from the Scottish Executive, includes new schools and schools with a history of road injury accidents.
