Welsh motorists given seat belt reminder

Police in north west Wales are reminding people to wear seat belts after three deaths in three months in the Gwynedd and Anglesey areas.

During the past month 283 drivers in the two counties have been spotted not wearing their seat belts, prompting the region's coroner to call for people to wear them.

"In recent cases the body of the car has survived the impact, but because the occupants have not been wearing seatbelts they have either been thrown around inside the car or thrown out," said coroner Dewi Pritchard Jones.

"Forget your seat belt and remember it for the rest of your life," added police inspector Ifan Jones. "It is often the case that the passenger's compartment remains intact and the seconds that it takes to apply a seatbelt undoubtedly saves lives."

The force has distributed leaflets explaining the potential consequences of not wearing a seatbelt.
