'Park safe - walk safe' proves popular in Cardiff

Cardiff Council's Road Safety Unit has recently introduced Park Safe - Walk Safe to highlight to parents, guardians, and other drivers the dangers of parking too close to school.

The scheme was developed to reduce the risk of a child or parent being injured near the school entrance - and to provide valuable daily walking exercise, and enable parents to teach children vital road safety skills.

Parents are requested to park their vehicles away from school entrances in designated streets or parking areas and walk a short distance to school. Each week the names of children who have walked all or part of the way to school are recorded on a wall planner. At the end of each term children who have walked an average of three times per week receive a Park Safe - Walk Safe gift.

Funding and support for the initiative has been provided by a grant from the Welsh Assembly Government, and it is being supported by South Wales Police, local traffic wardens and newly appointed police community support officers.

Park Safe - Walk Safe was launched in January and 15 schools in Cardiff are currently participating.
