JRSO scheme
launches in Blaenau Gwent
The launch of the Junior Road Safety Officer scheme in Blaenau
Gwent took place at Abertillery Primary School on Tuesday 9 March.
JRSO is being piloted in Blaenau Gwent as a result of grant funding
from the Welsh Assembly Government.
Each school in the area will appoint two Year 6 pupils as Junior
Road Safety Officers, who will be supported by Maria Barsi, Blaenau
Gwents road safety officer.
Junior Road Safety Officers will carry out various tasks including
maintaining a special road safety noticeboard, accessing the JRSO
website, organising competitions and - with the help of the road
safety officer - tackling road safety problems that affect the school
community.
The scheme ties in with Key Stage 2 guidelines from the National
Curriculum and aims to encourage pupils at the peer level to take
responsibility for their own learning and decision making.
At the launch Junior Road Safety Officers were presented with their
JRSO pack that contain a number of resources, their ID badge and
a high visibility waistcoat and baseball cap.
