Initiatives
reduce SCP vacancies to all time low in Cornwall
For the first time in 10 years Cornwall County Councils
School Crossing Patrol Service has filled virtually all of its
vacancies - there are currently only two vacant posts across the
county.
Since a recruitment crisis in autumn 2001, when vacancies peaked
at 22 out of a total of 125 sites, the number has been gradually
dropping and by summer 2002 it was down to 10.
The dramatic drop is the result of a number of measures introduced
to improve recruitment and retention. These include: increasing
the advertising budget to ensure maximum media coverage of vacancies,
including press and radio; targeted leaflet drops in vacancy areas;
extension of the recruitment age from 65 to 70 (subject to an annual
medical); and an additional 15 minute allowance per duty for patrols.
"Our four SCP co-ordinators have worked hard to reduce the
number of vacancies across the county," says Joan Mallard,
county RSO. "An increase in staff time has allowed them to
focus more specifically on recruitment and selection. This is in
addition to their supervisory duties - which include risk assessments,
dealing with health and safety and occupational health issues -
and the normal administrative duties necessary to maintain 125 patrol
sites, permanent patrols and flying reliefs."
