Road safety
bid to prevent frogs croaking
Every child in Scotland should know the basics of road safety thanks
to the Green Cross Code.
But
Glasgow City Council is putting emphasis on the green
- with a new road safety scheme for frogs.
The project will help steer young frogs away from a busy road in
the west of the city, where they risk being squashed by cars. A
ramp will run from the bottom of the pond where they spawn to a
safe grassy area - giving the young frogs easy access to dry land.
And by extending it for more than a dozen yards once it reaches
the grass, it is hoped it will steer the frogs in the opposite direction
from the road.
Signs will also inform the public that the young frogs are nearby,
and urge people to bear their safety in mind.
Council conservation bosses hope to have the frog ramp in place
within a month. The scheme has been specially timed to coincide
with the frog-spawning season, which runs from late March until
July.
