Young Londoners
debate safety cameras and speed
Heart 106.2FM presenter Toby Anstis hosted the first
ever 'Safety Camera Question Time' at the House of Commons
on 5 March.
The debate was organised by the London Safety Camera Partnership
(LSCP) in a bid to engage young drivers - and as a result reduce
speed-related crashes in London.
19 per cent of drivers killed or seriously injured on Londons
roads are aged 17-24 years - and 78 per cent of young drivers involved
in speed-related accidents are male.
Safety Camera Question Time was an opportunity for Londons
young people to question a panel of prominent traffic and transport
professionals.
"The aim of the event was to educate young people and reinforce
the message that by slowing down drivers can reduce the risk of
being involved in collisions which can cost lives," said commander
Jo Kaye, who heads Metropolitan Services Traffic
and Transport Unit.

David
Williams, chief executive of Guild of Experienced Motoring
Assistance added: "Too many people are killed and seriously
injured on London's roads as a result of crashes and speed is a
major contributory factor. An open debate involving young inexperienced
drivers discussing these problems and highlighting acceptable methods
of overcoming them will, I am sure, prove to be of great benefit
- not only to those taking part, but to all of us working in the
field of road safety".
