Hard hitting
drama targets younger drivers
A hard-hitting theatre in education performance targeting young
drivers toured Milton Keynes secondary schools during the first
week of March.
The drama, For my girlfriend, supports the road safety campaign
of the same name that launched on Valentines Day.
'For my girlfriend' is an innovative piece of drama that includes
an entertaining and thought-provoking workshop. The workshop is
aimed at those who are learning to drive, those who have passed
their test, and their passengers. The play centres on four young
characters - Jason, Craig, Laura and Jessica - and their relationships
prior to, and after, a crash that was the result of driving too
fast.
The production is a funny, poignant, and moving story about young
love, friendship, independence and the dangers of driving too fast.
Some of the difficult issues raised during the performance include
driving too fast, peer pressure, risk taking, drink/drugs and driving
and living with the consequences of death or permanent disability.

"Sadly
our crash figures continue to show a significant number of people
being hurt in the 17 25 year old age group," said David
Frost, road safety team leader. "This is reflected
in the high cost of their insurance premiums, because of the higher
risk they pose.
"We have considered different ways of getting the message across
and of raising awareness about road safety issues," David Frost
added. "Feedback suggests that theatre remains a very effective
media with this age group."
