New campaign targets Hampshire riders

Flimsy fashion clothing might look good, but it could be the shortcut to disfiguring injuries if you are wearing it when you fall off your moped or scooter.

That's the message from Hampshire County Council as it launches its latest campaign warning of the dangers of riding without proper protective clothing. Featuring two hard-hitting posters showing bloodstained clothing following an accident, the campaign is backed by information leaflets and targets young riders who often do not appreciate the need to wear adequate clothing while travelling on two wheels.

"Riding without protective clothing can mean even a low speed fall results in serious abrasion injuries as the rider slides along the road," said Hampshire's road safety services manager, Ernie Sage. "The onset of warmer weather is a particular danger point, when the temptation to keep cool in t-shirts, shorts and sandals can have horrendous consequences if people come off their mopeds. Even a heavy coat, gloves and jeans can make the difference between a few bumps and grazes and a lengthy stay in hospital - or worse."

Posters and leaflets will be distributed to schools, colleges and youth organisations during spring 2005.
