SIDs spread speed message
Milton Keynes school children acted as human Speed indicating
Devices (SIDs) to express their opinion of how fast drivers
travel past their school as part of activities to mark Walk to School
week.
On Thursday 27 May children from Hanslope Combined School displayed
approving posters to drivers observing the speed limit, and warning
signs to those who ignored the speed limit.
"The children gave out a clear road safety message to drivers
travelling past their school," said David Frost,
road safety team leader at Milton Keynes Council.
This innovative scheme was deliberately timed to coincide with National
Walk to School Week when thousands of children across Milton Keynes
made their journey to and from school on foot.
"The children wanted to give a clear message to motorists who
drive past the school too quickly and put them and their fellow
pupils in danger," said headteacher Russell Fancourt.
"While the electronic speed indicator device appears to be
effective a clear message of disapproval to drivers from these children
will hopefully have a humbling and long lasting effect."
