Steer Clear launches CD and hazard perception test

An interactive hazard perception test forms the basis of a new educational road safety CD.

The CD has been produced by the Steer Clear Motor Project in conjunction with Sheffield Youth Offending Team, with funding from Sheffield First for Safety and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.

Based on an innovative method of producing ‘clickable’ video, the hazard perception test allows users to watch a video clip and click on moving objects they have identified as hazards while the video continues to play. At the end of the test a report is displayed telling users how many of the hazards they have seen, along with the time it took to spot them.

The hazard perception test is a key part of the CD, which has been produced to warn young people of the consequences of car crime and dangerous driving and to encourage them to learn to drive responsibly. Other elements of the CD, which is aimed at 11 – 17 year olds, include video about the dangers of car fires, what happens if you are involved in an accident, tips for buying a used car, motorcycle safety, reaction tests and quizzes about key road safety issues.

The hazard perception test, developed by Smart Perception, is also available on the internet and can be tried at www.smartperception.com/steerclear.

The CD is available at an introductory offer of £10 via the website www.steerclear.org.uk.
