Three triumph
in sustainable travel town challenge
Three cities have been named as the winners of the 'showcase transport
town' competition. Darlington, Peterborough and Worcester
will share £10m over five years to develop a package of
measures to promote walking, cycling and bus use.
The winners will be able to implement their plans for more sustainable
transport choices, which include innovative school, work and personalised
travel plans, cycle lanes and secure cycle parking, improved conditions
for walking, and improved bus services and facilities.
"Darlington, Peterborough and Worcester will have the opportunity
to implement an intensive and strategic package of alternative travel
choices aimed at reducing car journeys and combating congestion
in their towns," said transport minister Kim Howells.
"The three towns will act as a model for other local authorities
of what can be achieved through a combined package of measures to
increase travel choices.
The sustainable travel town initiative was announced on 30 June
2003 and 51 local authorities submitted expressions of interest.
As a result of the strength of the bids from the three successful
cities funding was increased from £7.5m to £10m.
