Irish police launch HGV safety campaign

The Irish police, the National Safety Council and local authorities across Ireland have launched a road safety initiative focusing on pedestrians and their interaction with heavy goods and public service vehicles.

'If you can't see the truck driver, he can't see you', warned deputy police commissioner Fachtna Murphy when launching the road safety initiative. "This campaign is aimed at raising the awareness of pedestrians regarding road safety and in particular the 'blind spot' that truck drivers and pedestrians must contend with."

Police want the message to reach older people as well as young people - almost two-thirds of pedestrians killed in Ireland in 2004 were over the age of 50. Pedestrians are being warned not to cross roads close to trucks or buses and to use pedestrian crossings where possible.
