Police launch bike crackdown

Lothian and Borders Police have launched a crackdown on speeding bikers across its region.

Officers are to patrol on marked and unmarked motorbikes in a bid to reduce the number of casualties resulting from bike crashes.

Police will be focussing on 'born again' bikers - riders who return to biking after a gap of several years. These riders have the money to buy powerful bikes - but not the necessary safety skills to ride them.

In a further bid to spread the safety message officers from the force's motorbike section have been appointed liaison officers for motorbike dealerships in Edinburgh.

Superintendent Colin McNeill, head of Lothian and Borders Police's traffic branch, said they hoped the campaign would get the message across to motorcyclists who break the law that they are risking their lives - and those of other road users.

"The number motorcyclists' deaths as a result of crashes in our region has reached 26 for the last four years - a worrying trend that we are determined to try and halt," he said.
