Signs remind drivers before cameras

Interactive warning signs to slow traffic down have been appearing across Northumberland and Tyne and Wear over the last few weeks - in advance of safety camera deployment.

The Northumbria Safety Camera Partnership has been working with local authorities to identify camera locations where motorists might benefit from an extra reminder to keep within the 30mph limit.

The solar powered signs flash up a 30 or 40mph reminder to any approaching vehicle that is travelling over the limit.

"By introducing these speed indicators across the area we can hopefully work towards preventing further collisions at the same time as reducing the number of drivers exceeding the limit," said project manager Ray King.

Five of the locations for speed indicators are at new mobile camera sites in Sunderland, and are part of a pilot scheme to monitor driver behaviour.

The aim is to highlight the new sites before enforcement begins - giving drivers the opportunity to alter their behaviour and slow down before the cameras are deployed.

"This works as an early warning system for drivers," said Mr King. "Most of us are law abiding and keep within the speed limit but we can all benefit from reminders from time to time. These signs will flash any vehicle approaching the camera that is over the limit, giving drivers plenty of time to safely adjust their speed."
