Stunt rider promotes cycle helmets

Rich Johnson, a professional stunt cycle rider, has been using his acrobatic skills to encourage children in Southend on Sea to wear a cycle helmet.

Rich has been visiting local primary schools as part of a campaign to promote wearing cycle helmets as cool. The display involves jumping over a 'high jump', balancing on front and back wheels, spins, turns and jumps.

During the display there is discussion about the importance of wearing a helmet, followed by a question and answer session. Rich Johnson shows that even as a professional stunt rider it is very important to always wear a helmet.

The programme included a free safety check with qualified mechanics checking pupils' bikes and giving a written report. The checks showed that only one bike in 10 was in very good condition, with faulty brakes, loose handlebars, loose saddles, worn tyres, buckled wheels, no reflectors or bells among the faults.
