Beer goggles drive home dangers

Peterborough's road safety team provided teenage pupils at a Peterborough school with special 'beer goggles' to highlight the dangers of drink driving.

The pupils took it in turns to wear the 'beer goggles', which mimic the effects felt by a driver who has drunk alcohol, and were then asked to try and kick a ball to demonstrate how it affects co-ordination. Many of the pupils at Ken Stimpson Secondary School were shocked that they couldn't even hit the ball.

"Everything that we have seen and heard today has made us really think about what could happen when we start driving," explained 16-year old Stephanie Potter. "The pictures of people after car crashes were just horrible, but they really make it clear why you have to be so careful when you drive."

The day was organised in conjunction with Peterborough Constabulary, Cambridgeshire Safety Camera Partnership and the Driving Standards Agency. Workshops highlighted driving issues such as speeding, peer pressure, seatbelt wearing and drug driving. The play, 'Legal Weapon', was also performed to the youngsters.

"Our Young Drivers Day aims to target those who haven't yet started driving so that we can influence their attitudes and behaviour before they even get behind a wheel," said Clair George, road safety officer. "We have shown these teenagers just what can happen if they don't face up to the responsibilities of driving."
