ROAD SAFETY NEWS - UPDATED 22 NOVEMBER 2004

Pupils wax lyrical

A collection of poems selected from thousands of entries to an annual illustrated road safety poem competition was officially launched last week at Pentrepoeth Primary School, Newport.

The competition, Outside my Front Door , is run by Capita Symonds' road safety team in conjunction with Heddlu Gwent Police and has been running since 1999. Pupils from schools in Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen were encouraged to submit poems on a variety of road safety themes and some of the best have been selected to make up a poetry Big Book for use in primary school literacy sessions.

Civic dignitaries from each authority attended the launch along with representatives of Heddlu Gwent Police, the Wales Assembly and teaching advisors from several local education authorities. The highlight was a performance of one of the poems by a group of pupils from the host school.

A copy of the book has been sent to every school in each of the five unitary authorities.
