ROAD SAFETY NEWS - UPDATED 15 NOVEMBER 2004

Road safety scores winning goal

The DfT's two-year deal to provide funding to football clubs in return for road safety groups sponsoring matches has scored highly among supporters and clubs alike.

Somerset County Council's road safety group recently took the opportunity to promote the road safety message to football fans when it sponsored the Yeovil Town v Macclesfield fixture on 16 October.

A poster competition with the theme 'speed' was held for secondary schools in the Yeovil area with two winners receiving a ticket for the match and having their winning poster design framed. Another competition was organised for the primary schools with the theme 'Be Safe, Be Seen'. The winners also won match tickets and a rucksack with a fluorescent football, and the winning designs were framed.

Road safety officers also handed out goodies as fans arrived, including air fresheners printed with the 'Make it your goal to reduce speed' slogan and yellow pens displaying the Be Safe, Be Seen logo. A page in the match programme was also dedicated to promoting road safety.

Luton Borough Council's road safety team sponsored the match between Luton Town and Wrexham in the Coca-Cola league on 6 November.

The team took the opportunity to promote the Make The Commitment campaign with a sign-up leaflet in the match programme. Luton Town players wore t-shirts printed with the THINK! logo and Kill Your Speed while tannoy announcements were made throughout the day. The guest hospitality package cemented working relationships with existing partners and forged some new ones. Luton Town also recorded an emphatic 5-1 victory.
