Young driver campaign enters new phase

Sandwell Council's road safety team is to launch a new phase of its young driver campaign, which highlights the dangers of drink driving and drug driving.

Three creative treatments are used in the campaign, which will run across Sandwell on billboards, bus shelters, bus backs and beermats for several months from the beginning of December.

The campaign highlights the following facts:

  • Young people are twice as likely to be driven by someone 'high' on drugs as someone over the limit for alcohol;
  • One in three drivers killed in road accidents have traces of alcohol in their system;
  • A quarter of drivers killed on the roads are under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident.

"We have retained the previously used campaign styling as we feel it is now recognised by our target audience," said John Billington, assistant road safety officer. "We are simply attempting to give people the facts about the problem - the issue of drug driving is completely underestimated by many young people."
