Professionals join forces to cut speed

Bradford Council joined forces last week with the police, ambulance and fire services to demonstrate the devastating consequences of speeding.

A smashed car was positioned in Centenary Square in the city centre to show bystanders what happens when a car crashes at speed. The event was organised by Bradford Council's Road Safety Team, West Yorkshire Fire Service, West Yorkshire Police and the Ambulance Service.

The council has also produced posters featuring phrases and photographs of road-crash victims.

Councillor Anne Hawkesworth said: "Hopefully looking at the wreckage of a car will help people realise the devastating effects of speeding and encourage people to slow down."

Crew manager Alan Holdsworth from Bradford Fire Station said: "We are witness to some horrific scenes that have often been caused by speeding motorists and hope that this high-profile event will raise awareness of the serious dangers of driving at speed."
