Cambridgeshire launches fenland waterways campaign

Cambridgeshire's road safety team has launched a campaign encouraging motorists to slow down and drive carefully when using roads running alongside waterways - or face the possibility of drowning.

There are typically three or four incidents every year in Cambridgeshire involving submerged vehicles as a result of cars running off the road. Reports show that in the main those involved were driving inappropriately - for example speeding or overtaking into oncoming traffic.

The joint venture with other partner agencies was launched at Huntingdon Fire Station on 16 October. The campaign is running on local radio and through posters and leaflets going out to businesses and parishes around the county.

Debbie Maith, RSO, said: "There are around 74km of highway in our county that run immediately alongside rivers and drains, which have claimed the lives of drivers and passengers - often due to driver error.

"Although we will be giving advice to people on how to escape from a sinking vehicle, we want to stress that avoiding ending up in this situation in the first place is the best way to stay safe."
