Student unions targeted in drive to cut road deaths

To coincide with Road Safety Week, the Make Roads Safe campaign targeted students at universities across the UK in an effort to promote political action on global road deaths and reduce young driver crashes in the UK.

An online petition to International Development Secretary Hilary Benn MP is the focus of Campaign on Campus, the latest initiative by the Make Roads Safe campaign, which is calling for urgent international action to improve road safety in developing countries.

The initiative coincides with a national tour by rock band Dirty Pretty Things, who are supporting Make Roads Safe and playing at university venues and towns during the tour.

Dirty Pretty Things singer Carl Barat (pictured top) said: "We need to do more to highlight the fact that 1.2 million people are needlessly killed on the roads around the world each year. This is why Dirty Pretty Things are supporting the Make Roads Safe campaign."

Campaign spokesperson, Caroline Luff, said: "By addressing road safety as a development issue and going into student unions with one of the top new rock bands in the country, we aim to get students talking about global road traffic injuries, demanding action from the government, and also beginning to think about how devastating road crashes can be for them and their peers".
